The IOTA Layer 1 (MOVE): A Deep Dive

Our latest integration is the IOTA Layer 1 (Move) network, enabling users to buy, sell, hold, and withdraw the native IOTA token via the Uphold Wallet.

IOTA positions itself as the decentralized blockchain infrastructure to build and secure our digital world, so let’s dive deeper into IOTA itself and break this down.

Beyond the Blockchain: The Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)

Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which utilize a sequential blockchain structure, IOTA's Mainnet is built on a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) architecture. This structure positions the IOTA ledger as an efficient, parallelized data structure designed for robust performance.

The main advantage of the DAG design is scalability. By processing transactions in parallel instead of sequentially, the IOTA network can achieve the speed and throughput necessary for real-world applications that require high transaction volumes, such as global trade and data transfer. This architecture is central to IOTA's goal of becoming the foundational backbone of the new digital economy.

The Power of Move: A Language Built for Security

IOTA’s enhanced programmability is powered by the Move smart contract programming language.

Move ensures protection against common vulnerabilities often found in smart contracts written in other languages. In this sense it can make the IOTA platform safer for handling complex and sensitive operations, such as:

  • Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization: Move's design makes it suitable for creating and managing digital tokens that represent physical assets.
  • Complex Smart Contracts: The language's expressive framework is designed to enable the creation of highly sophisticated and complex smart contracts.

Flexibility and Interoperability

IOTA is designed for flexibility, offering developers a dual-track environment to meet various needs:

  1. Inbuilt MoveVM: The native Move Virtual Machine (MoveVM) utilizes the IOTA network's core speed and security for native applications.
  2. Layer 2 IOTA EVM: The network also supports the IOTA EVM, a high-performance Layer 2 solution. This provides full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility, allowing developers familiar with Ethereum tooling and Solidity to integrate seamlessly and leverage IOTA's speed.

This design gives developers the freedom to build with either the security-first Move language or the industry-standard EVM, depending on the application’s requirements.
