A privacy layer built with encryption, not obfuscation

Zama describes itself as an open-source cryptography company that has built a cross-chain confidentiality layer for blockchains using advanced encryption technology. Unlike privacy approaches that obscure on-chain activity after the fact, Zama's technology allows smart contracts to compute directly on encrypted data. The data stays encrypted throughout, including during processing.

The Zama Confidential Data Blockchain Protocol is live on Ethereum mainnet, with planned extensions to other EVM-compatible chains in H1 2026 and Solana in H2 2026.

What ZAMA enables

Zama's technology stack focuses on three dimensions, Confidentiality, Programmability and Compliant disclosure, to enable institutions to participate in on-chain finance. Through encrypted balances and transfers, programmability via smart contracts that operate on encrypted data, and selective disclosure for regulators and institutions. Together, they make institutional finance viable.

The role of the ZAMA token

The ZAMA token is the native asset of the Zama protocol. It is used for:

  • Staking: Participants stake ZAMA to access protocol services and contribute to network security.
  • Governance: Token holders vote on protocol parameters and ecosystem decisions.
  • Fees: Protocol fees associated with verifying encrypted inputs, decryption and bridging encrypted values across chains

Token supply and distribution

In January 2026, 8% of total supply (880 million tokens) was distributed via a public sealed-bid Dutch auction using Zama's own encryption technology, raising $118.5 million at a clearing price of $0.05 per token, oversubscribed by 218%. Team allocation is 20%. Investor allocation is 20%.

The project has raised over $150 million at a $1.2 billion valuation, backed by Multicoin Capital, Protocol Labs, Pantera Capital, and Blockchange Ventures.
