In an effort to ensure accounts are secure, members will need to download and use the Authy app to receive secure single-use push notifications.
At Uphold, we remain dedicated to providing our members with world-class security in a user-friendly, easy to access digital wallet. Uphold has designed its platform to empower our members to take action, protect their accounts and most importantly the value placed in their Uphold wallet.
Our platform security team recently discovered vulnerability issues related to SMS two-factor authentication (SMS 2FA), out an abundance of caution and to ensure our members' accounts remain secure Uphold immediately suspended SMS 2FA. Going forward, all members will need to download and use the Authy app, which provides a secure single-use push notification that can be used to login to you Uphold account and approve/ initiate transactions. Authy is a free two-factor authentication app that many Uphold members have already been using as an alternative to SMS and provides members with an extra layer of security.
While we understand this may be a temporary inconvenience if you were using SMS 2FA, this process brings an extra layer of security to your account and helps prevent unauthorized activity within your Uphold wallet. This is an important step in ensuring your account remains secure and is not susceptible to bad actors or hackers, who may be able to compromise your SMS service and gain access to any account linked to that 2FA account.
What this means for our members:
- Your Uphold account and the value you entrusted with us remains safe and secure.
- If you already have and use the Authy app not additional steps are required!
- For members who do not already have the Authy App, you will need to download it to enable two-factor authentication.
- Authy will recognize your existing phone number associated with Uphold.
- You will now be required to provide a unique Authy code when you log in to your account and when initiating a withdrawal.
By using the Authy App for 2FA you prevent any unauthorized activity on your account.
What is two-factor authentication?
Two-step authentication (2FA) adds an additional layer of security to your online accounts. Instead of entering only your password to access an account, with 2FA you need to enter your password, and then a code sent via the Authy app.
Why should I download the Authy App?
The best way to defend against such malicious tools is to ensure that you use multifactor authentication for all of your login accounts online. This ensures that a bad actor cannot simply utilize your password they can steal from your machine, but requires them to have a device that you have to input a short one-time use code in addition to your user ID and password, making it extremely difficult for a hacker to take over your account or data.
