StaFi (short for ‘Staking Finance’) is a cross-chain, liquid staking derivatives platform for all Proof-of Stake (PoS) chains. The project was founded by Young Liam, Tore Zhang & DaJun in 2018.

Staking usually involves locking up a portion of your assets for a fixed amount of time. StaFi was designed to address this particular liquidity issue.

Users can stake Proof-of-Stake network tokens on StaFi, and gain rewards in the form of 'rTokens’. ‘rTokens’ represents a liquid version of the staked asset, which can be used across the DeFi ecosystem. For instance, if a user stakes XTZ, they will be allocated rXTZ tokens.

The platform’s utility token, FIS, was first sold publicly in September 2020 via IEO (Initial Exchange Offering) on AscendEx.

Rocket Pool is an “Ethereum 2.0” staking pool. It allows anyone to participate in a decentralized node operator network and stake their Ethereum in exchange for up to 4.33% APR.

"The protocol seeks to lower both the capital and hardware requirements for staking on ETH 2.0, adding to the decentralization and security of Ethereum," Messari said. "To achieve this, Rocket Pool allows users to stake trustlessly towards a network of node operators."

To this end, the network allows users to participate with only 16 ETH (as opposed to the typical 32 ETH requirement), Rocket Pool grants users access to node operation through collaborative efforts with the protocol itself or the option to run the node individually.

Rocket Pool also enables users to participate in ETH2 staking regardless of their initial capital investment or technical know-how. Operating via a non-custodial, decentralized, and secure premise, Rocket Pool strives to enable the trustless staking of ETH to a network of decentralized autonomous nodes underpinned by RPL collateral.

Acting as a complementary protocol to staking-as-a-service providers, Rocket Pool enables providers the opportunity to generate and maximize returns by joining Rocket Pool and running a node, in which they receive rewards in both ETH and RPL. This means that in theory, exchanges could harness the capabilities of Rocket Pool by creating a series of nodes that stake 16 ETH respectively.

RPL acts as the primary protocol token for the Rocket Pool infrastructure, allowing users to participate in governance through the two DAOs (Protocol DAO and Oracle DAO). Additionally, RPL can be staked on a Rocket Pool node as a means of insurance which is repaid to the protocol in the event that the staking closes with less than 16 ETH or in the event that the node is slashed.

However, the Rocket Pool protocol also utilizes a second token, rETH (Rocket Pool Staking Deposit Token), which acts as a representation of a tokenized staking deposit that is afforded to users after they deposit into the protocol. As a wrapped equivalent to Ethereum for the Rocket Pool protocol, rETH awards users as they stake their Ethereum through the automatic accrual of staking rewards based on the performance of the entire network of node operators.

The value of rETH is protected. The insurance mechanism: node operators stake RPL on nodes as collateral.

When was RPL created and how much was it worth?

RPL first began trading in July of 2018 at $1.0078 and reached an all-time high of $154.73 in November of 2021, from which it has since shed over 80% of its value, according to CoinMarketCap.

Rocket Pool has a three-token structure, as Messari explains.

RPL is one of them. It is native to the protocol, used for governance and is also bonded by node operators seeking an added layer of security on top of their validation services. Node operators need RPL and 16 ETH in order to render services to running the network.

"This represents additional skin in the game and those node operators with RPL bonds should accrue increased share of user staking," Messari said.

The minimum collateral required is currently 10% of the ETH value. Another token, rETH, represents staked and yield-bearing ETH. ETH is swapped for rETH when users stake towards a node operator in the Rocket Pool network, Messari said.

A third token, nETH is a 1:1ETH representation of the deposit, rewards, and commission of node operators, Messari said.

Unlike a majority of DeFi tokens operating via a fixed, or deflationary, tokenomics structure, Rocket Pool adopts an inflationary model, whereby the total supply inflates by 5% per annum. Arguing that this is a means of generating rewards for its participants whilst the project generates value, Rocket Pool has defended this model stating that a fixed-supply model would result in value generation being at the expense of its users. This model was designed with the intention of incentivizing stakeholders and funds alike to continue building upon their decentralized infrastructure.

Newly issued RPL tokens are issued at a 70% rate for node operators staking RPL as insurance collateral, at 15% for Oracle DAO members providing a suite of oracle data, and a further 15% for the Protocol DAO Treasury to help fund decentralized development. At the time of writing, the supply of RPL is just over 10 million, according to CoinMarketCap.

The Rocket Pool team holds 15% of the supply. Pre-sale investors received 40% of the supply and an additional 14% in referral bonuses.

The average price of distribution for pre-sale investors was $0.21. RPL has been above $1 since 2020. 

Emissions will take place over the course of the next decade and is expected to increase circulating supply from about 20 million tokens to about 30 million.

RPL value ties into take-up of its Ethereum-staking technology, as more users fulfill their 16 ETH mini-pool validator criteria, stoking demand. Additionally, RPL provides users with value-add advantages within the protocol.

Rocket Pool would appear to prioritize security, having been successfully audited by three firms and also boasting of a bug bounty program, aiming to proactively enhance safety.

The Rocket Pool protocol is said to provide users with the opportunity to generate up to 4.33% APR on their staked Ethereum.

RPL increases accessibility to node operation and staking Ethereum due to their custom node software. Having implemented smart nodes, Rocket Protocol allows any user/business/group to run a node on the network whilst also staking their ETH for free and generating higher returns.

RPL’s governance is determined by two DAOs, the Protocol DAO and the Oracle DAO. The latter connects the smart contract activity on the Beacon Chain (Ethereum’s PoS transaction chain or ETH 2.0) with the Ethereum main chain (ETH 1.0), facilitating ETH 2.0 staking.

The knock against Rocket Pool, according to one crypto review website, is that the coin is still under development and also there are multiple issues with its synchronizations between ledgers.

Stader Labs, a staking platform startup, is said to be building a crucial middleware infrastructure layer for multiple Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks, allowing for a multi-chain fountain of yield-generating opportunities.

Stader’s native token is SD. It’s used for governance and as a means for running Stader smart contracts (via staked SD tokens) and as a reward for liquidity pool provisioning.

Stader is trying to be linchpin connecting retail crypto users, exchanges and custodians, as it is building "extremely modular smart contracts, so third parties can leverage its components and build custom solutions," CoinGecko said.

The project counts at least nine blockchains on which it is developing capabilities. These include Solana, Ethereum 2.0, Avalanche, Terra 2.0, Near, BNB, Fantom, Polygon and Hedera Hashgraph.

 Staking is a way for holders to put their digital assets to work earning passive income, locking away coins – in exchange for a yield – to assist PoS chains in need of trustworthy participants to conduct operations and maintain security.

 Stader's multi-chain liquid staking protocol lets users unlock their locked, reward-earning tokens by way of a mirror token, or liquid staking derivative, equivalent in value to the native token staked, Stader has explained. "This mirror token can then be used across DeFi protocols across a blockchain to earn additional yield over and above staking rewards," a Stader Labs post said.

Maximizing passive income opportunities and seamlessly transcending barriers – these are the primary goals being pursued in a time of fast-moving DeFi innovations moving well beyond relatively limited-in-use wrapped tokens.

Stader facilitates the staking of its own native token, SD, intrinsically tied to the mechanics of the protocol. This means that when a user stakes via the Stader platform, a percentage fee is deducted (ranging between 3-10%, as determined by governance factors) from the rewards generated, with this then rewarded to those who stake the SD token. As well as having a primary token, Stader also has an auto-compounding equivalent, xSD, that is provided to users after they stake SD. The xSD token retains governance rights, access to preferential delegations, slashing insurance, and liquidity pools.

Aside from providing staking tools to their own user base, Stader also supports the development and deployment of staking solutions courtesy of other protocols. Having recognized the complexity of providing a staking platform that encompasses every variant of the technology, Stader’s modular smart contracts grant superior flexibility to protocols as they develop on the blockchain. In an effort to deliver on its mission to “onboard the next billion into the staking ecosystem,” Stader seeks to serve as a hub for development, as well as a comprehensive solution in itself, to ultimately provide a staking ecosystem that lets users access every possible passive income maximization tool.

In the long term, Stader has dedicated itself to nurturing third parties entering the staking ecosystem. Having dedicated a portion of their total token supply to incentivizing and funding those building on the Stader infrastructure, various projects have already been onboarded, including AAVE, Balancer, Beefy Finance, and Quickswap.

When was SD created and how much was it worth?

Headquartered in Bangalore and Singapore, Stader Labs was founded as a staking platform venture in April of 2021 by Sidhartha Doddipalli, Dheeraj Borra and Amitej Gajjala.

In January of 2022, Stader raised $12.5 million in a funding round led by Three Arrows Capital. Early success was tied to the staking of Terra's LUNA. Stader's first smart contract was launched in November of 2021 on Terra which later, in spring of 2022, collapsed and forked into two chains. Around the end of November of 2021, the earliest SD stakers could farm tokens at a price of $0.43.

The total token supply of the SD token is capped at 150 million, with the vast portions of these distributed to incentivize third parties to build on the network. Stader has dedicated 36% to rewards and farming, 17% to the team and its advisors, 4% to public sales, 11% to the ecosystem fund, 15% to the DAO Fund, and 17% to private sales.

Stader has a total fixed supply of 150,000,000 tokens, with vast portions of this pool dedicated to fostering the ecosystem, funding the DAO, and providing incentivization to its users and those building upon the ecosystem. In order to further generate value, Stader relies on the staking of its native token and the adoption of its staking technology, thus expanding the ecosystem and generating rewards for the community and inflating its value.

SD value owes to supply/demand dynamics and to a large extent wi9ll depend on more blockchain projects building upon Stader’s modular smart contracts. If more users flock to the Stader platform, and begin to stake tokens and to grow the ecosystem, the more SD value increases.

 As users stake, Stader deducts a 3-10% fee from any rewards earned through staking, with these funds being put back into the project itself and acting as an incentivization to validators, projects building on Stader, and those who stake the SD and xSD tokens, respectively.

In March of 2022, Stader successfully underwent a series of smart contract audits courtesy of three security firms, Halborn, Peckshield and Certik, ahead of the deployment of a yield generator, Degen Vaults.

Stader continues to collaborate with the trio who act as their permanent audit and security partners.

As of October 2022, Stader has undergone at least ten successful audits across multiple chains. Additionally, Stader uses multi-sig admin accounts to change smart contract parameters to ensure maximal security.

Additionally, Stader undergoes smart contract parameter changes on an interim basis to maintain security.

Still, despite all of the aforementioned risk mitigation measures, in August of 2022, Stader’s NEAR liquidity pool was targeted through vulnerabilities in the smart contract and more than $800,000 worth of funds was stolen from the platform.

Driven by a strategy that focuses on delegators first, Stader is designed to offer a convenient and safe way to maximize user returns on staking, one reviewer, Everything Blockchain, stated. "By deploying curated vaults of Validators within a specific network’s Validator ecosystem," the reviewer added, "it assures maximized yields."

Stader simplifies the staking process. And it solves for inferior decentralization, that is, when an overabundance of voting power rests with too few validators.

Stader’s governance is determined by a DAO, which sets rewards policies, while steering the future of the platform. Issues of importance could include things like the timing of when the tokens reserved for the DAO should be released. 

Many staking platforms are confined to one specific blockchain. However, Stader’s multichain approach removes the hassle of navigating multiple platforms and wallets, instead providing an all-inclusive staking solution that prioritizes accessibility.

Discussing Stader, Everything Blockchain called attention to the lofty aspirations of bringing simplicity and greater decentralization to multi-chain staking, emphasizing that were this to somehow be pulled off it would be “nothing short of magic;” but as of now, features and products still have to show, over a long-term period, that all of this hype is warranted. In other words, it’s still too early to tell.

Chia (XCH) is the native digital currency of the Chia Network.  Introduced in May 2021, Chia was designed by Bram Cohen, the creator of the peer-to-peer file-sharing system BitTorrent, as a decentralised blockchain to achieve greater energy efficiency than other crypto assets. 

Presented as the “green crypto,” XCH is created through a process dubbed “farming,” a more eco-friendly version of mining. Rather than creating coins through an energy-intensive process of solving complex equations through a traditional Proof-of-Work (PoW) model, Chia farmers harvest XCH through a “Proof-of-Space-and-Time" (PoSt) process intended to maximise storage space.

The point of the Chia PoSt process is to allow network participants to demonstrate that they have been collaboratively storing data over measured time periods. Under the Chia protocol, a farmer will initially expend energy creating "plots" on hard drives but will subsequently utilise the energy-efficient resource of drive space over the following years to participate in the consensus mechanism used to verify new entries on the Chia blockchain. In simple terms, this means that farmers will load up unused computer storage space with strings of digits used to validate transactions.

The protocol uses an enhanced, streamlined implementation of Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output (UTXO) model. These simplifications increase the flexibility and programmability of coins. Chia farmers are rewarded with two XCH per block for the initial three years as the incentive mechanism that supports a new Nakamoto consensus.

Critically, the Chia blockchain is friendly to small “mom & pop” home participants and was adopted by thousands of initial farmers upon launch in March of 2021. User adoption soared in May 2021 after Amazon began offering Chia mining in the Amazon Web Service’s cloud.

On May 3, the network released, alongside their programming language Chialisp, 21 million of their green digital currency, XCH.

Volume in XCH has been light, as only a few exchanges thus far have listed it. After an initial trading price of nearly $1,600 per XCH, it fell to a low of $550 as of the end of the first week of May 2021. During the following week, as of May 16, 2021, XCH rose back near $1,300.

It could take up to 21 years for the supply to double via farming under the current protocol but with evolving technology, it is expected to be close to achieving that level within six years. A governing company oversees the network and holds a significant cache of pre-mined XCH. Chia intends to go public in the U.S. through an IPO. The company’s purpose in listing is for the public shares to float in a manner like an exchange-traded fund tied to the value of the pre-mined cache.

Founded in 2017 by former Qualcomm and Intel engineers, Solana (SOL) is a single-chain, delegated-Proof-of-Stake protocol focused on delivering scalability without compromising security. 

The Solana blockchain is underpinned by Proof of History (PoH) which is a proof for verifying the order and time passage between events.

If a developer is trying to create something decentralized, whether some form of online prediction marketplace or a payments network, the Solana blockchain aims to be a one-stop hub with speed and scale as its calling cards.

Created in 2017, SOL set out to create an ultrafast network that could efficiently support monumentally expanded "transaction throughput," or how many transactions can take place each second.

The Bitcoin and Ethereum networks, as users increased, haven’t been able to transact fast enough.

Solana the blockchain claims it can process more than 50,000 transactions per second.

SOL the token, in addition to providing participation permissions to staked users, can also be used for generating staking rewards, paying transaction fees on the network and for PoS voting (governance). 

Some 500 million SOL were initially created. Of those, a relatively small portion (12.5%) was kept by founders. Another 12.5% are held by the Solana Foundation.

More than one-third of the supply (38%) was designated as community tokens; roughly another one-third (35.4%) was allocated to locked investors.  

By design, Solana transaction fees are paid in SOL and burnt (or permanently destroyed) as a deflationary mechanism to reduce the total supply and thereby maintain a healthy SOL price.

In October, Solana launched the Wormhole connecting Ethereum to Solana’s network, enabling projects, platforms, and communities to move tokenized assets without interruption, benefiting from Solana’s high speed and low cost.

After sinking to as low as $0.50 in May of 2020, SOL has increased since then by about 700%. As of mid-January 2021, SOL was roughly $4 and back on the rise after a turbulent period following its September 2020 high mark of just above $5. Since flirting with sub-$1 in November of 2020, SOL has continued to break all resistance levels with more analysts convinced that new highs are close at hand. Because the DeFi sector is booming, there’s greater demand for Ethereum alternatives which has sent SOL’s trading volume to record-highs, now nearly $100 million per day on average.

Long-term investors can look to the Solana blockchain as being key to support stablecoins, considered a powerful source of growth in the crypto sector, particularly considering the outlook for digital banking in the wake of the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) having recently said that banks may use new technologies, including independent node verification networks (INVNs) and related stablecoins, to perform bank-permissible functions, such as payment activities.

SRM is the staking token of Serum, a decentralized exchange (DEX) and ecosystem built on Solana, which has limited governance capabilities. The decision to adopt Solana over Ethereum due to its cost-efficiencies and scalability allows the ecosystem to operate on a completely permission-less basis. 

The Serum ecosystem was built to provide maximum transactional efficiency with full limit order books including direct interfaces which operate as a centralized exchange with sub-second trading and settlement speeds. At $0.00001 per trade, SRM transaction costs ranked as the lowest DEX fees when launched in August 2020.

Serum was initiated by the Serum foundation in conjunction with partners including FTX, Alameda Research, and the Solana Foundation. The FTX/Alameda connection garnered a good deal of attention for SRM due to the public profile of FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.

Serum has initiated a cross-chain gateway between its exchange and the Ethereum network. This bride, called Wormhole, creates an entry point for non-Solana DeFi users to navigate trading SRM. Serum has also introduced a second token designed to offer deeper trading discounts called MegaSerum (MSRM). One MSRM is equal to 1 million SRM stacked together.

SRM is strongly associated with Solara blockchain adoption and as more DeFi market share has shifted from the Ethereum network to Solara SRM volume has swelled. As more front-end user interfaces, including Bonfida and Raydium, have extended access to Serum trading books, SRM has recorded daily volumes exceeding $1.5 billion.

After launching in August 2020, SRM achieved an all-time high near $13 in early May of 2021 when the total market cap exceeded, briefly, $600 million. By the end of the second week of May of 2021, SRM had fallen to $9 and the market cap was $460 million.

Founded in September 2017 by H.E. Justin Sun, the TRON network has continued to deliver impressive achievements since MainNet launch in May 2018. July 2018 also marked the ecosystem integration of BitTorrent, a pioneer in decentralized Web3 services boasting over 100 million monthly active users. 

The TRON network has gained incredible traction in recent years. As of October 2022, it has over 116 million total user accounts on the blockchain, more than 4 billion total transactions, and over $13.2 billion in total value locked (TVL), as reported on TRONSCAN. In addition, TRON hosts the largest circulating supply of USD Tether (USDT) stablecoin across the globe, overtaking USDT on Ethereum since April 2021. 

The TRON network completed full decentralization in December 2021 and is now a community-governed DAO. In May 2022, the over-collateralized decentralized stablecoin USDD was launched on the TRON blockchain, backed by the first-ever crypto reserve for the blockchain industry - TRON DAO Reserve, marking TRON’s official entry into decentralized stablecoins. Most recently in October 2022, TRON was designated as the national blockchain for the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is the first time a major public blockchain partnering with a sovereign nation to develop its national blockchain infrastructure. 

On top of the government’s endorsement to issue Dominica Coin (“DMC”), a blockchain-based fan token to help promote Dominica’s global fanfare, seven existing TRON-based tokens - TRX, BTT, NFT, JST, USDD, USDT, TUSD, have been granted statutory status as authorized digital currency and medium of exchange in the country.

TRX was one of the most popular coins traded during the 2017/2018 cryptocurrency bull market, going from $0.002 (USD) at the start of December 2017 to $0.182 on January 8th, 2018. 

Aside from a significant rise at the end of April 2018, it has mostly been trading between $0.01 and $0.04 since June 2018.

Cosmos wants to create ‘The internet of blockchains.’ A network of blockchains that can communicate in a decentralized way.

Cosmos is a network comprised of many independent chains, all of which utilize the byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus algorithms. Cosmos allows developers to build both permissionless and permissioned blockchains. The network launched with the release of its first blockchain, the Cosmos Hub, in 2019.

Back in 2017, the Interchain Foundation, a Swiss non-profit organization that funds open-source blockchain projects, contracted for-profit Tendermint, Inc. (which also utilizes the name All Bits, Inc.) to develop and launch the Cosmos software. Tendermint was launched in 2014 by Jae Kwon, who developed his own byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) consensus mechanism and started the company to develop business-related opportunities for the algorithm. 

Kwon co-wrote the Cosmos whitepaper and Tendermint raised $9 million to continue the project through a Series A funding round in March 2019.

The team behind Cosmos plan to accomplish their vision via a set of open-source tools. The Cosmos network is composed of three separate technologies. The Tendermint protocol, responsible for governance; the Cosmos software development kit (SDK), an easy way to develop applications; and the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.

The network supports token, data, and asset exchanges between blockchains. The Hubs that connect all these fluctuating blockchains require validators staking the ATOM currency, which will earn ATOMs for staking, thus the more connected the network becomes, the greater the potential for passive income to be generated through staking.

Too long a lock-up?
There is a minimum lock-up period to stake your tokens of three weeks. For the casual investor, this presents a problem through a lack of flexibility. The lock-up makes it hard if you want to sell up quickly.

Hype: Arguably many cryptos full into this category; many enjoy hype they can’t possibly live up to.

Infighting:
Back in February 2020, there was a huge falling out between the co-founders, which started strangely. Jae Kwon accused Zaki Manian of blasphemy, arguing over whether this software was “godly” and demanding that Manian renounce his “self-professed godliness.” Yup, all true, not something from a Star Trek episode. For potential investors, this kind of stuff can be off-putting.

Their platform to build apps is more user friendly and customizable than other solutions in the market. With the SDK, Cosmos wishes to reduce the development time of a new blockchain from years to weeks.

Partnerships:
ATOM has some fantastic partnerships with the likes of Binance and also with the Oracle Corporation and high profile cryptos such as OmiseGo.
