Chia (XCH) is the native digital currency of the Chia Network.  Introduced in May 2021, Chia was designed by Bram Cohen, the creator of the peer-to-peer file-sharing system BitTorrent, as a decentralised blockchain to achieve greater energy efficiency than other crypto assets. 

Presented as the “green crypto,” XCH is created through a process dubbed “farming,” a more eco-friendly version of mining. Rather than creating coins through an energy-intensive process of solving complex equations through a traditional Proof-of-Work (PoW) model, Chia farmers harvest XCH through a “Proof-of-Space-and-Time" (PoSt) process intended to maximise storage space.

The point of the Chia PoSt process is to allow network participants to demonstrate that they have been collaboratively storing data over measured time periods. Under the Chia protocol, a farmer will initially expend energy creating "plots" on hard drives but will subsequently utilise the energy-efficient resource of drive space over the following years to participate in the consensus mechanism used to verify new entries on the Chia blockchain. In simple terms, this means that farmers will load up unused computer storage space with strings of digits used to validate transactions.

The protocol uses an enhanced, streamlined implementation of Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output (UTXO) model. These simplifications increase the flexibility and programmability of coins. Chia farmers are rewarded with two XCH per block for the initial three years as the incentive mechanism that supports a new Nakamoto consensus.

Critically, the Chia blockchain is friendly to small “mom & pop” home participants and was adopted by thousands of initial farmers upon launch in March of 2021. User adoption soared in May 2021 after Amazon began offering Chia mining in the Amazon Web Service’s cloud.

On May 3, the network released, alongside their programming language Chialisp, 21 million of their green digital currency, XCH.

Volume in XCH has been light, as only a few exchanges thus far have listed it. After an initial trading price of nearly $1,600 per XCH, it fell to a low of $550 as of the end of the first week of May 2021. During the following week, as of May 16, 2021, XCH rose back near $1,300.

It could take up to 21 years for the supply to double via farming under the current protocol but with evolving technology, it is expected to be close to achieving that level within six years. A governing company oversees the network and holds a significant cache of pre-mined XCH. Chia intends to go public in the U.S. through an IPO. The company’s purpose in listing is for the public shares to float in a manner like an exchange-traded fund tied to the value of the pre-mined cache.

Founded in 2017 by former Qualcomm and Intel engineers, Solana (SOL) is a single-chain, delegated-Proof-of-Stake protocol focused on delivering scalability without compromising security. 

The Solana blockchain is underpinned by Proof of History (PoH) which is a proof for verifying the order and time passage between events.

If a developer is trying to create something decentralized, whether some form of online prediction marketplace or a payments network, the Solana blockchain aims to be a one-stop hub with speed and scale as its calling cards.

Created in 2017, SOL set out to create an ultrafast network that could efficiently support monumentally expanded "transaction throughput," or how many transactions can take place each second.

The Bitcoin and Ethereum networks, as users increased, haven’t been able to transact fast enough.

Solana the blockchain claims it can process more than 50,000 transactions per second.

SOL the token, in addition to providing participation permissions to staked users, can also be used for generating staking rewards, paying transaction fees on the network and for PoS voting (governance). 

Some 500 million SOL were initially created. Of those, a relatively small portion (12.5%) was kept by founders. Another 12.5% are held by the Solana Foundation.

More than one-third of the supply (38%) was designated as community tokens; roughly another one-third (35.4%) was allocated to locked investors.  

By design, Solana transaction fees are paid in SOL and burnt (or permanently destroyed) as a deflationary mechanism to reduce the total supply and thereby maintain a healthy SOL price.

In October, Solana launched the Wormhole connecting Ethereum to Solana’s network, enabling projects, platforms, and communities to move tokenized assets without interruption, benefiting from Solana’s high speed and low cost.

After sinking to as low as $0.50 in May of 2020, SOL has increased since then by about 700%. As of mid-January 2021, SOL was roughly $4 and back on the rise after a turbulent period following its September 2020 high mark of just above $5. Since flirting with sub-$1 in November of 2020, SOL has continued to break all resistance levels with more analysts convinced that new highs are close at hand. Because the DeFi sector is booming, there’s greater demand for Ethereum alternatives which has sent SOL’s trading volume to record-highs, now nearly $100 million per day on average.

Long-term investors can look to the Solana blockchain as being key to support stablecoins, considered a powerful source of growth in the crypto sector, particularly considering the outlook for digital banking in the wake of the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) having recently said that banks may use new technologies, including independent node verification networks (INVNs) and related stablecoins, to perform bank-permissible functions, such as payment activities.

SRM is the staking token of Serum, a decentralized exchange (DEX) and ecosystem built on Solana, which has limited governance capabilities. The decision to adopt Solana over Ethereum due to its cost-efficiencies and scalability allows the ecosystem to operate on a completely permission-less basis. 

The Serum ecosystem was built to provide maximum transactional efficiency with full limit order books including direct interfaces which operate as a centralized exchange with sub-second trading and settlement speeds. At $0.00001 per trade, SRM transaction costs ranked as the lowest DEX fees when launched in August 2020.

Serum was initiated by the Serum foundation in conjunction with partners including FTX, Alameda Research, and the Solana Foundation. The FTX/Alameda connection garnered a good deal of attention for SRM due to the public profile of FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.

Serum has initiated a cross-chain gateway between its exchange and the Ethereum network. This bride, called Wormhole, creates an entry point for non-Solana DeFi users to navigate trading SRM. Serum has also introduced a second token designed to offer deeper trading discounts called MegaSerum (MSRM). One MSRM is equal to 1 million SRM stacked together.

SRM is strongly associated with Solara blockchain adoption and as more DeFi market share has shifted from the Ethereum network to Solara SRM volume has swelled. As more front-end user interfaces, including Bonfida and Raydium, have extended access to Serum trading books, SRM has recorded daily volumes exceeding $1.5 billion.

After launching in August 2020, SRM achieved an all-time high near $13 in early May of 2021 when the total market cap exceeded, briefly, $600 million. By the end of the second week of May of 2021, SRM had fallen to $9 and the market cap was $460 million.

The Helium network is a decentralized, interconnected system of wireless devices, the Helium hotspot, powered by blockchain technology. The native Helium token (HNT) is designed to facilitate the growth and operational efficacy of the infrastructure that powers the network, dubbed by its creators as "the people's network." 

The company was created in 2013. Co-founder Amir Haleem, a long-time proponent of a decentralized internet, created a decentralized IoT networking protocol called LongFi. 

HNT tokens are an incentive for users to become nodes on Helium’s network.

Network participants who create hotspots are compensated with distributions of HNT tokens. 

The linchpins of the infrastructure base are the hotspots comprising two main elements, which are the physical blockchain node and a wireless gateway. 

The node serves as a device by which blockchain mining can be conducted by platform users.The wireless gateway functions to connect a user to the network and other devices that make up that network, thereby regulating data traffic between the IoT–Internet of Things. 

Overall, a fully operational network of hotspots allows connected devices to use the Helium LongFi wireless protocol to transmit data across large geographical distances, all without having to route data flows through a centralized source. 

Haleem along with co-founder Shawn Fanning, one of the original developers of Napster, and Sean Carey all had experience in peer-to-peer internet connectivity services and by virtue of their enterprises were keenly aware of the limitations of wireless communications. WiFi and Bluetooth both seemed overly vulnerable to interruptions, prohibitively expensive, and just not conducive for full, fluid integration of new technological devices.

As of mid-April 2021, the price of HNT was hovering around $15. On April 7, HNT hit an all-time high of nearly $21.

Year-to-date, HNT has returned a staggering 1,000%. Only one year ago, the token was eleven cents.

The 10-day average trading volume of $53 million is indicative of growing market activity around HNT, as average daily trading volumes were stuck below $1 million for much of last year. 

In the near-term, a manic crypto market at large might be subject to volatility impacting altcoins such as HNT which with its $1.2 billion market capitalization is the 98th largest crypto, per CoinGecko’s ranking of largest cryptocurrencies by market-cap.

Upside appears abundant looking at the long-term. Helium represents a platform located at the intersection of blockchain infrastructure and wireless communication.

The cellular industry is trying to build a low-cost network for IoT on traditional licensed spectrum called NB-IoT, as tech-blogger Stacey Higginbotham pointed out in her Helium deep dive last year. Other companies, such as Sigfox and Senet, are also trying to build low-power IoT networks from scratch.

Haleem’s contention is that in order to cost-effectively connect smart devices (e.g. smoke detectors) to a network, that network must be decentralised and look more like a shared, user-created network.

As blockchain, wireless, IoT and other various related technologies continue to advance and become embraced across a global marketplace, HNT could conceivably reap benefits for years to come.

Founded in 2014, Tezos broadly speaking is an open-source platform for assets and applications. Look below the hood, and you see it’s a self-amending decentralized ledger backed by a global community of validators, researchers and builders.

Tezos facilitates peer-to-peer transactions, and also the establishment of decentralized applications (DApps) on the network. The network utilizes smart contracts to automatically execute the terms of a buyer-seller transaction agreement.

Network participants use proof-of-stake verification to come to a consensus on whether that block comprises a valid transaction. 

This all sounds pretty similar to other blockchains that use smart-contracts, such as Ethereum. Where Tezos exhibits a stark difference from other blockchain-based transaction networks is with regards to its governance.

XTZ is the governance token adopted by the network for voting on upgrades to the underlying Tezos protocols.

Tezos epitomizes democratic on-chain governance. Any participants on the platform can stake XTZ in smart contracts to participate – or select someone else to participate on their behalf – in deliberation and formalization of agreements on protocol upgrades. This enhance-as-we-go process is known as self-amendment. 

With some other blockchains, protocol amendments are proposed and agreed upon; major amendments can result in forks. 

But with Tezos, the changes arise fluidly then automatically take effect. No forks, no ecosystem fragmentation. 

Ultimately, self-amendment governance aims to promote democratic stakeholding, and keep upgrade costs in check. 

Seamless governance is the foundation supporting the potential for constant growth of the intrinsic value of Tezos’s network.

Since new upgrades can be made on a continuous basis, the protocol is able to incorporate new technologies to fulfill the needs of a larger client base. 

XTZ gets introduced into the marketplace through mining i.e. validation and endorsement of the blocks comprising transaction records on the ledger. 

Those who mine and endorse blocks are required to purchase bonds – security deposits that mature at the end of each mining cycle –beforehand. 

At the end of each cycle, bondholders are compensated with different rewards of XTZ (varying, depending on their status as either a miner or endorser). 

Ultimately, miners yield 33% on their security deposit bonds. These serve as an effective counterweight to any potential validation fudging – if you give inaccurate information, then you lose your security deposit. The current mining structure implies an annual nominal inflation rate of around 5%; but this can be subject to change, given that over time stakeholders potentially can vote on operational changes.

XTZ launched via ICO in July of 2017 and raised around $232 million to put it in the category of one of the largest token issuances of all time. Unfortunately, a dispute among its creators subsequently emerged, ultimately delaying the launch of the network until June 2018. However, since this debacle, Tezos has seen remarkable gains as it caught tailwinds of DeFi hype beginning around November 2020. Its year-to-date performance currently (as of early May 2021) sits around +174%, with the token at about $5.75. 

Average daily trading volumes have come down from their peak in mid-February, but an appetite for XTZ ownership has certainly picked up from last year, especially considering how just about anyone can participate in the proof-of-stake verification method and thereby be entitled to receive compensation.

Although the total supply is large in comparison with other digital assets, not all XRP is circulating in the market. The Ripple Labs company still holds a high percentage of the total supply, which is reserved for the ongoing funding and development of RippleNET. 

A big part of the XRP value proposition derives from the fact that a certain amount of XRP coins are burned after every transaction, making it deflationary by nature. Also, XRP requires a minimum of 20 XRP for every new wallet address assigned. 

Like many cryptocurrencies, XRP doesn’t require a whole-unit purchase. You can buy fractions of XRP in fact, a single XRP is divisible up to six decimal points, with 0.000001 being the smallest unit, known as a "drop".

Cardano is a multi-layered blockchain run by a non-profit foundation made up of scientists from around the world, which includes the University of Edinburgh and the Institute of Technology in Tokyo, Japan.
