Founded in 2017, Energy Web was born as a nonprofit joint venture between RMI (a global non-profit dedicated to decarbonising the energy sector) and Grid Singularity, a blockchain developer. Energy Web remains committed to their original mission—decarbonizing the global energy transition via open source, Web 3-based software solutions.

Energy Web Token (EWT) is the network's native utility token. It is used to power Energy Web's solutions and applications as well to provide security to the network through staking and paying for transactions within the network, while also securing and compensating validators operating the protocol’s proof of authority consensus mechanism.
