In order to create and account and use Uphold’s services, your identity must be verified. Uphold uses a third-party services provider, Veriff OÜ (“Veriff”) to verify your identity. In order to do so, Veriff will collect personal information about you, including biometric characteristics and measurements.

The Veriff identity verification tool uses facial recognition technology. The technology works by comparing a picture of a government-issued ID document to a photo of your face. It requires you to take a photo of your face using your mobile device (i.e., a “selfie”) and to scan a government-issued ID document that also includes a picture of your face, as well as your first and last name, date of birth and address. The personal information collected during this phase of the process will include the details of the document that you present to Veriff (for example, government ID’s number, date of issuance and expiry, gender and nationality) as well as the photograph of your face.

The technology compares the image of your face provided through the selfie with the photo included in your governmental-issued ID document in order to confirm your identity and then generates a decision. A report of this decision is sent by Veriff to Uphold who uses it to fulfil the identity confirmation requirement imposed by anti-money laundering, terrorist financing and bank secrecy legislation. Your personal information collected through the Veriff identity verification process will be used solely for these purposes.

Veriff and Uphold will use reasonable safeguards to protect your personal information. Only their authorized employees that require it for the purposes of their duties will have access to the information, for the purposes mentioned above.  Veriff will store the information you provide in its system using reasonable safeguards. Uphold will save a copy of the verification report (which only includes the information required to be retained for compliance with anti-money laundering legislation and does not include your image or photo, or any other biometric characteristics or measurements) for recordkeeping purpose for a period of five years, or such longer period as required by law. Subject to applicable law, you have the right to request access to the personal information concerning you that is held by the Recipients and the correction of this information. In order to exercise your right of access and rectification, please contact Uphold by mail at one of the locations below.

By clicking on “Continue” you confirm that you have read and are consenting to this collection and use of your personal information, including biometric characteristics and measurements, by Veriff for the purposes of identity verification and the sharing of the results of this verification by Veriff with Uphold for the same purposes. Certain parts of verification may be automated. Please review Veriff’s Privacy Policy for more information.
